Pi Alpha's Herstory

The sisters of Pi Lambda Chi wanted to continue on the path created by the Gamma Chapter and spread word of the FINEST Green & Gold throughout the East Coast. After years of back and forth, a door finally opened when Edalmira Hernandez contacted the national board in hopes of learning more about the organization. Similar to our Founding Madres, Edalmira had a group of women who were seeking to pursue an organization that best fit their values. On November 6, 2015 - VP of Expansion, Beverly Gallegos connected Edalmira with an Hermana living on the East Coast, Chanel Ortiz.

On July 17, 2016 Chanel traveled from Philadelphia to Lancaster, Pennsylvania to meet with the women and establish an official interest group. The group, consisting of Edalmira Hernandez, Letitia Hernandez, Kiersten Cunningham, and Hilda Perez, would then be referred to as the “Interested Mujeres of Pi Lambda Chi Latina Sorority Incorporated.”  Over the next year, the “mujeres” participated in various community service events, fundraisers, and numerous bonding activities. Along the way they recruited Margarita Candelaria-Darden and Joselyn Hernandez.

Later that year the group decided to host an interest weekend in Philadelphia where they would introduce themselves and present their accomplishments to Pi Lambda Chi Hermanas. This event drew in seventeen sisters from all over the country, most of whom had never been to the East Coast before. With a unanimous decision the sisters agreed the group was ready to start the official intake process. Finally on July 22, 2017, almost two years after the initial conversation, the six women crossed over into the sisterhood of Pi Lambda Chi Latina Sorority, Incorporated. Beginning the Pi series to represent the first ever Professional & Graduate chapter, the women would then be referred to as Comadres of the Pi Alpha colony*. The rest is Herstory!
